MSEF Alumni Panel
Ethan Whitman
Doctoral Student, Duke University
Ethan Whitman is currently a Ph.D. student at Duke University studying the relationship between brain function, mental illness, and aging. He participated in the MSEF fair in 2012 and 2013 with two research projects in organic chemistry. He studied psychology at Tufts University, where he studied brain function in combat veterans with PTSD. Ethan worked as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health studying youth with sex-chromosome disorders. Currently, his work focuses on brain features at midlife that may predispose people to subsequent aging-related disease
Bethlehem Solomon
Teaching Fellow, Imperial College London
MSEF alum, Bethlehem Solomon is currently at Imperial College London as a Teaching Fellow in Public Health and PhD student (Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics). Her PhD focuses on measuring housing quality through a public health lens at the small-area level in London and estimate its associations with health. Beth remembers quite vividly what it meant to participate in MSEF and how her perspective and interests have involved as she has pursued a STEM career.
José Zepeda
Research Fellow, Vanderbilt University
José Zepeda grew up living between Cambridge Massachusetts and San Luis Río Colorado in Sonora, México. José graduated from Chelsea High School and participated in MSEF in 2014 in physics and engineering on a project studying double pendulums to model chaotic systems. He attended University of Massachusetts Boston where he obtained a bachelor’s in biochemistry. José is now a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and PhD student in neuropharmacology at Vanderbilt University where he studies mechanisms of synaptic plasticity, the brain's ability to make and break neural connections, within the reward circuitry of the brain.
Vivek Gopalakrishnan
PhD Student, Harvard-MIT
Vivek Gopalakrishnan is a 2016 and 2017 MSEF Alum, 2017 ISEF Alum and a semi-finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search. Vivek is currently a PhD student in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics at the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology. His research interests lie in the development of machine learning methods for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and neurovascular disease. Vivek also volunteered his time this school year to mentor an MSEF High School student.
